The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History seeks a science writing intern interested in gaining
experience in an active communications and public affairs office. This is an excellent opportunity to expand your
professional portfolio and learn how to present science and natural history stories to the public in relevant and
engaging ways.

Due to COVID-19, this internship may be virtual. The intern will primarily produce content on a variety of scientific
topics for the museum’s blog, Smithsonian Voices.

Young Ambassadors Program

National Museum of the American Latino

The Young Ambassadors Program (YAP) is a national college preparatory and leadership program for graduating high school seniors that fosters the next generation of community-conscious Latino leaders in the arts, sciences, and humanities via the Smithsonian Institution and its resources. Selected applicants will participate in a weeklong pre-professional and pre-collegiate seminar in Washington, D.C. at the Smithsonian focusing on Latino perspectives with peers from all over the nation.

Intern Duties: Promotional and programmatic support for the large scale public events, with a special focus on after-hours, Smithsonian-wide programs for young professionals.

Youth Engagement through Science (YES!) Teen Internship

The Youth Engagement through Science (YES!) internship is a career immersion and science communication program for youth between the ages of 14-19, who are currently enrolled in high school (grades 9-11) in the Washington D.C. region. The YES! program provides youth from populations that are traditionally or historically underrepresented in science an opportunity to engage in an immersive, hands-on internship with Smithsonian science staff.

Fall 2022 - Our Places: Connecting People in Nature

Join a dynamic and diversely skilled team working on a new exhibit at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) called Our Places: Connecting People & Nature. Our Places is a collaborative effort between the Office of Exhibits and the Office of Education, Outreach, and Visitor Experience at NMNH to design an exhibition to create change. Nature is all around us every day. We form connections to the natural world through the places we live, work, study, and visit. People find themselves, community, and inspiration in nature.

The Shirley Ann Jackson Science Internship

Central Smithsonian Wide Internships

To honor the achievements of DC Public high school graduate and Smithsonian Regent, Shirley Ann Jackson, the Smithsonian is accepting applications for an internship program named in her honor.  This internship is for District of Columbia public high school students entering their junior or senior year or finishing their senior year. The internship is awarded to a student interested in science. Awarded students spend eight (8) weeks with their mentors in and around the Smithsonian facilities in the Washington DC area.

Smithsonian Libraries and Archives

The Smithsonian Libraries and Archives welcomes current or recent undergraduate and graduate students who wish to gain experience in archives, museum libraries, or related fields. Internships are typically eight weeks in length, often hosted during the summer. Part-time options, practicums and for-credit internships may be available. Opportunities vary and are based on available programs and projects.
