We are excited to invite applications from undergraduate students to participate in a National Science Foundation supported summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program focused on global change ecology. These internships are available as remote or in-person opportunities at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center located in Edgewater, MD (10 miles south of Annapolis).

Fall 2022 - Our Places: Connecting People in Nature

National Museum of Natural History

Join a dynamic and diversely skilled team working on a new exhibit at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) called Our Places: Connecting People & Nature. Our Places is a collaborative effort between the Office of Exhibits and the Office of Education, Outreach, and Visitor Experience at NMNH to design an exhibition to create change. Nature is all around us every day. We form connections to the natural world through the places we live, work, study, and visit. People find themselves, community, and inspiration in nature.

The Shirley Ann Jackson Science Internship

Central Smithsonian Wide Internships

To honor the achievements of DC Public high school graduate and Smithsonian Regent, Shirley Ann Jackson, the Smithsonian is accepting applications for an internship program named in her honor.  This internship is for District of Columbia public high school students entering their junior or senior year or finishing their senior year. The internship is awarded to a student interested in science. Awarded students spend eight (8) weeks with their mentors in and around the Smithsonian facilities in the Washington DC area.

Internships at the National Zoo

National Zoo

The National Zoo offers a variety of internship opportunities from animal care, veterinary medicine, IT, communications, animal enrichment, animal behavior, conservation, GIS One Health, nutrition, genetics, and more.   We have opportunities at the Zoo in Washington, DC and our Conservation Biology Center in Front Royal, Virginia as well as Hawaii. 

Invertebrate Zoology Collections and Research Material Management

National Museum of Natural History

The Invertebrate Zoology Department at the National Museum of Natural History has over 50 million specimens, many of them requiring frequent curatorial updates. Interns will assist in topping off fluid-preserved specimens, replacing outdated archival jars, stabilizing large batches of new incoming material, and much more. This internship program will provide students with the opportunity to get plenty of hands-on experience with research specimens and gain insight into how research specimens are stored and cared for.

Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage Internships

The Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage offers internships year-round in various fields, including folklore, cultural anthropology, ethnomusicology, linguistics, museum studies, arts administration, graphic and web design, videography, marketing, social media, and library science.

STRI-SENACYT Internship Program

Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute

Panama’s science and technology secretariat (SENACYT) provides internships to Panamanian students at local universities (undergraduates, recent graduates, and Master's students) so they can work alongside STRI scientists.

This program is designed to enhance intellectual development and give students real world experience working alongside professionals here at STRI.

STRI Internship Program

Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute

Competitive program funded by the Smithsonian and generous donors open to all nationalities.
The purpose of the STRI General Internship Program is to provide a place for internship applicants who are generally interested in STRI’s science to pursue a research experience with one of our scientific mentors based on their interests. Interns are selected based on merit and potential for achievement.
