Michelle Knovic Smith (1950–2021), as an educator, mentor, and leader, in her more than three decades at the Smithsonian, pioneered innovative and effective approaches to the Smithsonian's mission of the “diffusion of knowledge.” First, as Publication’s Director for the Institution’s teacher magazines, Art to Zoo and Smithsonian in Your Classroom, Michelle developed publications and distribution strategies that reached every school in the country.

Science Writing Internship

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History seeks a science writing intern interested in gaining
experience in an active communications and public affairs office. This is an excellent opportunity to expand your
professional portfolio and learn how to present science and natural history stories to the public in relevant and
engaging ways.

Due to COVID-19, this internship may be virtual. The intern will primarily produce content on a variety of scientific
topics for the museum’s blog, Smithsonian Voices.

Cellphone Exhibit Program Design Internship

Join a dynamic team of museum educators to design and deliver education programming for an exciting new exhibition: Cellphone: Unseen Connections. The Office of Education and Outreach at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) seeks two Cellphone Exhibit Program Design interns to assist the lead exhibit educator in the design, testing, and implementation of in person, digital and hybrid programs that support the exhibit.

Funded by the American Women’s History Initiative Collaboration and Community Fund, this internship is open to non-senior undergraduates, who have a strong interest in women’s history, politics and who have at least a 3.0 GPA.

Pre-program Conservation Internship at the National Museum of the American Indian

National Museum of the American Indian

Six-month pre-program internship designed for qualified individuals preparing to apply to a graduate-level training program in cultural heritage conservation. Pre-program interns carry out supervised documentation, examination and treatment of collections items requested for NMAI exhibits or out-going loans. An understanding of current conservation approaches to Native American/Indigenous cultural heritage materials is developed during the six-month tenure.

We are excited to invite applications from undergraduate students to participate in a National Science Foundation supported summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program focused on global change ecology. These internships are available as remote or in-person opportunities at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center located in Edgewater, MD (10 miles south of Annapolis).
