Smithsonian Office of Investments

The 2022 Office of Investments Internship Program will be 6-weeks, full-time, and will be a hybrid of virtual and in-person based at our Washington, DC office.  Due to Covid restrictions and the uncertainty of staff returning to on-site employment, the final determination of in office will be determined nearer the date; however, the Smithsonian follows the federal guidelines and may require staff and interns to show proof of vaccination.

An internship with the Office of Investments is an opportunity for students with a passion for and curiosity in institutional investment management to gain practical skills and experience. The Office of Investments (OI) manages a $2.5 billion multi-asset investment endowment and is responsible for the growth, safety, and integrity of the Institution’s financial assets.

The Smithsonian Institution’s diversified portfolio is invested with high quality managers and long-term partnerships aligned with endowment goals and interests. The Endowment is managed as a long-term pool of capital to exist in perpetuity and focuses on absolute rather than relative performance. The Office of Investments was established in 2006 and the team is comprised of seven investment professionals and three operations and administrative professionals.

  • Understand OI’s day-to-day procedures through involvement in administrative tasks.
  • Gain basic knowledge about the Institution’s investment management strategy, asset classes and investment process.
  • Hone research and analytical skills by assisting with various research projects (gathering data, summarizing information, using Bloomberg, preparing manager reviews, etc.).
  • Strengthen written and oral skills through presentations, reports and correspondence.
