Pre-program Conservation Internship at the National Museum of the American Indian

Six-month pre-program internship designed for qualified individuals preparing to apply to a graduate-level training program in cultural heritage conservation. Pre-program interns carry out supervised documentation, examination and treatment of collections items requested for NMAI exhibits or out-going loans. An understanding of current conservation approaches to Native American/Indigenous cultural heritage materials is developed during the six-month tenure. Interns benefit from work experience in a museum conservation department and are welcome to include work completed at the NMAI in their graduate school interview portfolios. This position carries a stipend. Applications are due in early February. Finalists will be invited to interview by phone. All applicants will be notified by the end of April. Internships commence in late September.

Applications must be completed and submitted through the Smithsonian Online Academic Appointment System (SOLAA). https://solaa.si.edu/solaa/#/public Requirements include transcripts of undergraduate degree (unofficial preferred); a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or its equivalent (with withdrawals and incompletes explained); curriculum vitae or résumé; and three letters of recommendation, with at least two from professional referees.
