Fire Protection Engineering Internship at the Smithsonian Institution

Application deadline: March 7, 2024

The primary purpose of the Fire Protection Division (FPD) internship is to provide a practical learning experience in the areas of life safety and fire protection engineering. Interested students should be enrolled in an engineering related major, from an accredited college or university, and willing to learn how to conduct facility assessments, perform design reviews, and provide construction oversight for fire protection and life safety systems.

The internship will familiarize the intern with the application of fire protection engineering principles and methodologies to a variety of environments and activities, including places of assembly, laboratories, collection storage and processing, as well as construction, production, and maintenance operations. The intern will have an opportunity to learn about building design review, including application of NFPA and ICC codes, as well as fire system inspection and acceptance testing.

The student will be responsible for conducting fire protection site assessments and assisting the review of design documents, system calculations and shop drawings, as well as participating in construction site inspections and fire systems evaluation. Students will be expected to demonstrate competencies in oral and written communication, leadership, and initiative.

This is a full time (40 hours/week), in-person summer intern position (10 weeks). A $800 stipend/week is offered.

Candidates should have completed at least introductory fire protection engineering courses. Prior work experience related to fire protection engineering is desired, but not required.
